Nguyễn Thị Phương Trâm | Cut me open (21)

My tongue not short of evidence
My eyes have seen you

By Nguyễn Thị Phương Trâm

Cut me open

You won’t find a heart

Search for me in my children

In their minds my soul

In their fists pieces of me

My kidneys on ice

My liver in slices

___oozing the poison of my youth

My tongue not short of evidence

My eyes have seen you

My brain is a nest of cobwebs

___a collection of beaming quavers crotchets

I have no recollection of ever having a pulse.

There's magic in translating a body of work from one language to another.

When there isn’t a heart, then only because yours was taken away.
When there isn’t a heart, then the thief will pay.
When there isn’t a heart, it might come back to you.
Recovered from an ice age, millions of years, thousands.
Like a shocking moment, as if you once died and were born again.
Like thousands of volts rushing through your body, a heart ignited again.
My words meaningless, if you would be alone with this.
It would mean nothing, if your heart would stay blue forever.
A hole to be filled by nothing ever.
But I know you have a heart.
Otherwise you would write about it.
