Nguyễn Thị Phương Trâm | What’s wrong with being ordinary? (120)

dare me, be so bold
what, you asked, how old?
fuck that, I’m already sold!
a quotidian slave
I live still in a cave

I’m typical
stock files
standard issue
everyday Jane
no more no less sane

By Nguyễn Thị Phương Trâm

What’s wrong with being ordinary?

the weed through the cracks in the road
the velvety moss on damp wet rocks
the desert sand
my father’s callus hands

the feet across the seas and lands
as common as the pebbles by the river banks
the regular Joe Blow
they sit by they hiss
what did I miss

I’m nothing but a regular Jane doe
I clean your toilets
I stack up the towels
I fold the sheets
I sleep with you in heat
I’m just so so
why are you so cold

dare me, be so bold
what, you asked, how old?
fuck that, I’m already sold!
a quotidian slave
I live still in a cave

I’m typical
stock files
standard issue
everyday Jane
no more no less sane

laughable yeah
me, being so mediocre
ordinary

There's magic in translating a body of work from one language to another.
