Thái Hạo | the brown dark earth (40)

Thái Hạo is a Vietnamese poet, journalist, and currently an editor of vanviet.info

The moon had disappeared into the empty sound void
the ants continued to solemnly stand tall in the dark
kept vigil by the celebrating darkness
pieces of the brilliantly blue wings to the ground fell
a pair of wings to the sky its last farewell
returned to the brown
dark earth.

By Thái Hạo, translation by Nguyễn Thị Phương Trâm

I opened the door because of a lost critter

banging its head on the shiny glass

with all the might of death

reserved for its wings

I searched in the sky for a lost star the year I turned 20

not sure of what date it was in the lunar cycle

but sliver of the moon was a brilliant scythe across the horizon

silent

looming

there was no one around

because very cold is the night moon

The critter lay limp on the veranda

after such a dive

its neck appeared to be broken

already were the arrival of the first few ants

they surveyed the dead body of the beetle

performed the last rites

before they carried the unfortunate knight back to their nest

they prayed

in silence

The moon had disappeared into the empty sound void

the ants continued to solemnly stand tall in the dark

kept vigil by the celebrating darkness

pieces of the brilliantly blue wings to the ground fell

a pair of wings to the sky its last farewell

returned to the brown

dark earth.

You’re welcome, I’ve learned a lot from translating them into English, that was the original reason. Then one of my mate encouraged me to share them on the blog. The feeling of the whole thing is so strange. Heheh, sorry about the chatter :))

Oh no dont think so, I really like you speaking actually I thought you wouldn’t chatter so I would read and leave with my thoughts silently. But your sharing and translating and poetry is great, I like all that you share and express about . its through you we get to know more about those writing we wouldn’t have ever reached. Thank you for taking all those efforts .

You are very kind, thank you. At the start I was very shy about blogging, then I found so many kind people. It is sometimes hard when I can not get the perfect words, but generally it’s no hardship, I love it. I’m glad I’ve shared them then. Again thank you. ❤ ❤ ❤
