At the hour of the rat you’re gone
*Thầy, you’ve travelled beyond
upon the setting moon past the hill
*
Returning how so
to the temple of old
all wrapped in the rain.
*
Ten years in your presence
Thầy, you’re the moon’s luminance
across the overflowing pond.
*
Thầy, you’ve headed for the road
in the icy Eastern wind
amid the two seas, in between.
*

Thầy đã đi rồi
canh ba trăng lặn
phía sau ngọn đồi.
*
Làm sao trở về
chùa xưa mưa đã
giăng khắp bốn bề.
*
Mười năm gặp thầy
một vầng trăng tỏ
soi ao nước đầy.
*
Thầy đã lên đường
gió đông thổi buốt
hai bờ đại dương.
.
Note: *”Thầy” is interchangeable with “sir” and “reverend”
