Nguyễn Thị Phương Trâm | The words, should it not be felt not heard (115)

Does a dog on heat require an explanation?

Does a black hole fear the inevitable?

Do you need me to hold your hand?

Nguyễn Thị Phương Trâm | Người đàn bà tôi yêu – the woman I love (109)

Nàng đó ở giữa cánh đồng lúa
trên lưng voi,
trong những hẻm,
trong những quán rượu,
đu đưa một thành thép lạnh.

Bụng của nàng đầy,
đầy những đứa con,
mổ ra,
đời đời những thế hệ con gái.

She cradles the baby in her arms
to the day it’s torn from her.

She waits for a husband
that never returns.

She is in the rice paddocks,
on elephant backs,
the alleyways,
the bar,
swinging on the cold steel pole.

in my heart the butterflies
your fingers the essence of flowers, cleanse
the unworthy flesh of a woman
a severed century
the blissful anguish

I’m jealous of a shadow
a light that isn’t mine
I’m blinded

So how do you know it breaks not, the heart of a stone”

Lê Vĩnh Tài | there (in Eden)

in the ground
shiny, awaiting the unravelling drama of a fool
always open up in ceremonies
hymns and prayers

allow the lie
and the idea of the poem
about a female Spider, mirrored upon a yellowing leaf
a reflection of a big fish consuming a deceased spirit
that’s you
drowning
in the rainwater.

Nguyễn Khánh Duy | Crossing the border (6)

My wife claimed I will find myself on the side
I will find what I seek other than the dotted blue flames
and the quietness of crossing the sea borders at night,
a person just died dear
a person was just raped
the blood and spermed still a mess
upon the dollar value of a human life.

Nguyễn Khánh Duy | Unification, unification and “unification” (5)

In spelling “thống nhất” for the third time,
I’ve noticed the two sharp accents.
Yeah well.
T-H-Ố-N-G — N-H-Ấ-T
yeah well, “unification”(in Vietnamese) has two sharp accents
but nooooo
how could it possibly be unified
because it has two(very) sharp accents!

Nguyễn Thị Phương Trâm | As old as the ancient trees (86)

Rips through a dormant volcano
Shimmering in an amber glow

In searing burnt flesh,
I thank you.

Nguyễn Thị Phương Trâm | trong giấc ngủ ta đã nguôi cơn thèm – in sleep my craving for you less (101)

trong giấc ngủ ta đã nguôi cơn thèm
mơ ước của ta là mang cho nàng một giấc mơ
trí tưởng tượng của ta chế ngự
để mỗi buổi sáng thức dậy ta không rùng mình, xấu hổ

in sleep my craving for you less
my lust for you a dream
my salacious imagination tame
me prickly in the morning, shame.

Nguyễn Cường | AN ENCOUNTER WITH AN OLD FRIEND

Vividly the autumn rain fell
Passing people ere eve
Hair peppered… silver felts
Raising cups of wine
Cheer once to our inebriation
To abridge the days and months apart

Nguyễn Thị Phương Trâm | Dignity is a measure of your pride (90)

The kindness of people helped me up
while my pride lay forlorn on the concrete,
alone I stood up and thanked them…

Eo tròn mông tròn…
tôi vẫn bước tới vôn vớt dành lại một tí tôi.

Surrender.

Under the blanket of blue
Within the dissolving morning dew
Your intangible body

Nguyễn Thị Phương Trâm | The sadness took me to that place (85)

Cô độc lãng du
Xung đột trong mặt máu ta
Thấm da thịt hơi thở (em)
Trong thân xác tan nát này
Thời gian

Pulsing through my veins
The wandering desolation
Permeating my flesh the air(of you)
Into this broken body
For a moment

Nguyễn Thị Phương Trâm | into a thousand teardrops (86)

into a thousand teardrops,
ashes in the wind blinded by the grains of time
squeezed in the hairline fractures in your rib cage
the silent ache throbs the beat of your heart

Lê Vĩnh Tài | loneliness, freezing over the rocks (95a)

with nothing you could do
to celebrate the lunar new year

you sat there staring at the velvety green moss
admiring the dreams of an old man
and a rock

you’re as silent as the sunrise
