Lê Vĩnh Tài | There’s still one way – Vẫn có một cách (58)

You shall walk alone in the dark
Tripping on your own thoughts
To after rise
Beneath the Sunlight

You will set free the truth
Allowing the vines of others to latch onto
The souls you’ll find
Residing in the Clouds and the Leaves

Lê Vĩnh Tài | the light dawned on your face (263)

you write
in the creation of a world on fire
hence the further hardship in poetry
more glory in the palm of your hand
the words swell upon your command

you write encryption on the rocks
often rather complicated
the vows
of a nation

you polished
the written words
with your agonizing sweat

write with all that is within your grasp
so much so the hairs on your skin would curl up
along with the thoughts in your head

write
the impossible
drill a hole through this
Godforsaken life…

Lê Vĩnh Tài | the muse (80)

no one takes her to weigh
she is too light
she hops around on the grass
in the wind to scrape up
a song
making the grains of dust as light as her
dream of blooming

Lê Vĩnh Tài | the paralyzing hopelessness of fame (261)

isn’t it funny how
as the poem opens a door
awaiting a whole new world
it would disappear like a cloud

is invention a thing anymore
where sadness is everything
as we all know
it’s dense like a shadow

Lê Vĩnh Tài | How should one savour a woman? (172)

Do you have faith in the wet damp softness
of silk
steeped in mint?

Or are you afraid of the odour and taste
of her sweat?

Lê Vĩnh Tài | if you love (74)

there’s no need to make her tolerate you
every night

if you love
more than the moon loves
moonlight
it never harasses the night
it’s, only a fair aspect of the dark

Lê Vĩnh Tài | how does one chew to bits the bones of a man? (260)

don’t pretend you don’t know
I, myself have succeeded once
in a war
long gone

I threw a napkin over the man’s face
I used the war as an excuse
chewed and swallowed my husband
the father of girls

Lê Vĩnh Tài | CORONA, THE YEAR 2030 (160)

the wind is but a warning
so our heart may be restored
in each other’s hand
not a need to wash them

to hold her
dry her tears
the gone ten years

Lê Vĩnh Tài | Let me draw a room to hold the fragrance of you (68)

Let me draw a room to hold the fragrance of you
If the walls could talk

Let them talk
Of how I would hold tight the billow of your breath…

Lê Vĩnh Tài | What’s a vulva, can you show me? (165)

I dream of an eloquent expression of the suggestiveness of the vulva
The suggestiveness of life from our elders
The children from their mother’s womb
The vastness…

Du Tử Lê | Take me to the sea when I’m gone – Khi tôi chết hãy đem tôi ra biển

A translation for my father.

I’ve learned the poem through my father, as a teenager never fully grasp the profound yearning and sadness in Du Tử Lê’s poem. Until I had translated the very last line, I finally had a glimpse of my father’s pain and the pain of soldiers like him; “The eternal exile of my soul”.

I am sorry, I am sorry for your pain, I am sorry for your loss, I am sorry it has taken me so long, I am sorry it has taken an entire lifetime.
